In this lesson we will be learning about 4 animals from different parts of the world. We will discuss where they live, what they eat and what animals can be found in the same parts of the world as the 4 animals being focused on. We will also read an article related to animals and the students will be asked a few questions about the article once everybody has had a chance to read and speak out loud.

Hyena

Habitat: Mainly lives in different parts of Africa - Hyenas can adapt to almost any habitat and are found in grasslands, woodlands, savannas, forest edges, sub-deserts and mountains as high up as 13,000 feet (3962.4 m), according to the National Wildlife Foundation.

Hyenas eat meat(carnivores) - The other hyena species are carnivores, which means they only eat meat. They are known to take advantage of other animals' kills for easy meals, but they aren't just scavengers.

They live and hunt in packs (groups of Hyenas) - Hyenas are very social and live in groups called clans. Clans can have up to 80 members, according to the National Wildlife Foundation.

Koala

Habitat: Koalas live in tall open eucalypt (gum tree) forests. Koalas can only live in bushlands where their favourite trees are growing, and they will only eat a few of the hundreds of species of eucalypts which grow in Australia.

Koalas sleep or rest for up to 22 hours each day because their bodies need a lot of energy to digest the gum leaves and when they are sleeping they save energy. Very few animals can survive on a diet of gum leaves. They are very fibrous and low in nutrition, and this is why they take a0 lot of energy to digest.

Aye-Aye

Habitat: The aye-aye is one of the strangest looking primates. This animal can be found only in the north-eastern parts of Madagascar. The aye-aye lives in the tropical rainforests and deciduous forests, usually at the altitude above 700 meters. The aye-aye builds several nests of twigs and leaves on its territory and it often changes its location to escape from the predators.



Diet: The aye-aye’s favorite food source is insects, nuts, palm tree nectar, coconut flesh and other fruits. The aye-aye’s middle finger is extremely thin, to the point that it looks no larger than the bone underneath. It uses this finger to find insects living inside of trees.

Giant Panda

Habitat: The giant panda was once widespread throughout southern and eastern China, as well as neighbouring Myanmar and northern Vietnam. But due to expanding human populations and development, the species is restricted to around 20 isolated patches of bamboo forest in six mountain ranges in China’s Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces.



Diet: As much as 90-98 percent of the panda’s diet consists of the leaves, shoots and stems of bamboo. Bamboo is available year-round in much of China’s forested regions. Physiologically, giant pandas are carnivores, which means they are made to eat meat. However, they prefer a vegetarian diet. The giant panda is no herbivore. He’s essentially a vegetarian, a carnivore that eats a little meat.
